searching for friends and family members. here's abc's alex perez. >> reporter: it was a dramatic scene that had two tennessee parents in a panic. little lauren, rescued from her family's attic by firefighters. her father, in shock. >> next thing you know, we're in the attic, trying to get the baby upstairs. and it's hard. it's scary. you don't know what the water's going to do. so -- lose a home. >> reporter: firefighters wading through that chest-high water, clutching on to baby lauren's carrier to get her to safety. >> it was emotional. you know, you see your baby. and she's a newborn. how are you going to do this? what are you going to do to get us out? >> reporter: across the nashville area, swollen creeks caused flash flooding, forcing some to the safety of their roofs. and leaving cars floating on streets. rescue teams fanned out, fighting the fast-moving waters, to get people out. not just tennessee. from arkansas, to missouri, the heavy rain is hammering the

heartland. over six inches of rain in madison, tennessee, double what they see in a month. in wallace, kansas, eight inches. and the worst, richland, missouri, 17 inches this week. enough for an entire summer. and here in the nashville area, there is water still rushing through these swollen creeks. you can tell how one point here the water rose so high, it carried that debris and garbage can up to that bridge. usually, this creek is only about one to two feet deep. alex perez, abc news, nashville. also happen right now, crews in southern california spent a second night battling that out-of-control wildfire east of los angeles. officials now say 26 homes have been destroyed. they expect the number to triple once they can see the damage firsthand. the fire was estimated at nearly 22-square miles with 20% containment. it is still growing. we'll have a live update on "good morning america." the search for a missing woman in oakland, california, has led police to a person of interest. they're combing through a

fairgrounds after questioning a registered sex offender who dated sandra coke 22 years ago. he was spotted with her on sunday, the day she went missing. he has a long criminal history, that includes kidnapping and rape. and he was previously charged in two murders. >> we have not arrested this person in this case. but we are looking at this person as a person of interest. they have had history of dating. they are known to each other. >> coke is an investigator for the federal public defender's office. her family and friends have put up a $100,000 reward. two college friends of suspected boston marathon bomber dzhokhar tsaranev, face charges for throwing away fireworks and other items they found in tsaranev's dormroom before capture. if crickonvicted, they will spe0 years in prison. the atlantic hurricane season has been fairly quiet so far. but there may be busy months ahead. the forecast is calling for three to five major hurricanes over the next few months, with

more torrential rain and flooding are in store for parts of colorado today. a slow-moving storm has dumped nearly three inches of rain in and around aurora. the downpour flooded streets in low-lying areas. drivers in the west can expect more slick roads on the

bloody body on facebook. he turned himself in after that picture appeared on facebook and stayed up for more than five hours. it was also a post that said he was going to prison for killing his wife. he claimed his wife, jennifer au lon zoe, was abusing him. there's a manhunt across the western u.s., for a kidnapping suspect that is accused of murder. james dimaggio is suspected of kidnapping hannah anderson, after setting their house on fire, with the girl's mother and likely her young mother inside. an amber alert is in effect for california, oregon, washington and nevada. he may have abandoned his blue nissan. and it may be rigged with explosi explosives. this man appeared at an accident sunday morning, as this young woman was fighting for her life. she had been trapped in the car for two hours. and she was asking for prayers.

witnesses say the man was dressed like a catholic priest. and he seemed to come out of nowhere. >> he came up and approached the patient. and did offer a prayer. it was a catholic priest. he had anointing oil with him. >> and a sense of calmness come over her then. >> crews managed to free the young woman. when they turned around, that man was gone. the mystery of how the shark got into the new york subway car may have been solved. a mom from brooklyn tell "the new york post," says her kids were taking pictures of a dead fish on the beach. a marine expert said that the sharks have a similar look and size. so, the question is, is the mystery solved? >> yeah, right. got to be surveillance video. there's got to be. >> bigger mystery. who put the red bull and the cigarette next to the shark.
